Paper anniversary gift ideas: 12 for your first year
Paper is the traditional gift for a first wedding anniversary, and clocks are the usual modern alternative. The best paper anniversary gifts carry something personal: a letter, your vows, a photo book of the year, tickets to something ahead, or a print of the day it began. Twelve ideas follow, with tips for choosing and for the last minute.
Why is paper the first anniversary gift?
The custom is older than most gift guides, and simpler than they make it sound. Emily Post's Etiquette, first published in 1922, lists eight wedding anniversaries. The list opens with "1 year, paper" and ends with diamond at 75 years.
Post was candid about the early ones. In her words, "the paper, wooden and tin wedding presents are seldom anything but jokes." Crystal, at 15 years, was the earliest she expected guests to take seriously. So if a paper gift feels modest, that is how the tradition began: light, a little playful, and personal rather than costly.
| Anniversary | Gift in Emily Post's list (1922) |
|---|---|
| 1 year | Paper |
| 5 years | Wood |
| 10 years | Tin |
| 15 years | Crystal |
| 20 years | China |
| 25 years | Silver |
| 50 years | Gold |
| 75 years | Diamond |
Post didn't invent the idea. As TIME has reported, an 1859 edition of the Old Farmer's Almanac already noted that "one year makes a paper wedding." The historian Stephanie Coontz places the custom of anniversary gifts in the late 19th century, the Victorian era, and has said that card makers joined in by the 1920s and jewelers in the 1930s. The longer lists, with a material for nearly every year, came after Post's short one.
None of the early sources say why paper comes first. The meaning people give it today fits well enough: a first year is a blank page, and paper is where you write the first part of the story.
Is the first anniversary gift paper or clocks?
Both, depending on the list. Paper is the traditional first anniversary gift, and clocks are the usual modern one. A two-column list compiled by librarians at the Chicago Public Library, last updated in 2000, gives that same pair for the first year: paper, then clocks.
Post's 1922 list has no modern column at all. The modern lists came later, and they don't always agree with each other, so treat them as suggestions rather than rules. Our chart of anniversary gifts by year sets four lists side by side and notes where they differ.
If you would rather give the modern gift, a clock can be as personal as a letter:
- An engraved clock. A desk or mantel clock with your wedding date, or a short line of your own, engraved on the back or on a small plate. It keeps time through every year that follows.
- An engraved watch. A watch is a clock they carry every day. If its case back is plain, ask a jeweler whether it can be engraved with the date or your initials.
Does the gift have to be paper or a clock? No. The tradition is a prompt, not a test. If you would like to honor both lists, a paper calendar for the year ahead (idea 12) is time, printed on paper.
12 paper anniversary gift ideas
1. A letter about your first year
Write, by hand, what you noticed this year: the small routines, the hard week you got through together, the thing they do that still surprises you. A letter costs only time, and it is easy to keep. If you like the idea of a tradition, start a folder and add one letter every anniversary.
2. Your vows, printed
If you wrote your own vows, or had a reading at the ceremony, set the words in a clean typeface and print them on heavy paper. Frame them, or roll them and tie them with ribbon. No written vows? The lyrics of your first dance, or the first message you ever sent each other, work just as well.
3. A photo book of year one
The first year usually lives on two phones. Choose 30 to 50 photos from the wedding, the trips and the ordinary days, put them in order, and have them printed and bound. Write a line under a few of them by hand. Leave time for printing and delivery.
4. Twelve envelopes, twelve dates
Fill twelve envelopes, one for each month of the coming year, each with a planned date inside: a picnic spot, a recipe to cook together, a walk you have never taken, a film night with the tickets already bought. Number them, and let your partner open one at the start of each month. The gift lasts the whole of year two.
5. Tickets to something ahead
A concert, a play, a game, a train to the city you keep talking about. Tickets count as paper even when they arrive on a phone: print them, or write the details on a card and seal it in an envelope. Something to look forward to suits a first anniversary, when most of the story is still ahead of you.
6. A book with a reason behind it
Pick a book for a reason: the one you were reading when you met, a novel set where you married, or a book published the year you met. Write the date and a few lines inside the front cover. A secondhand copy with a past of its own can mean more than a new one.
7. A map of where it happened
A printed map of the street where you met, the town where you married, or the route of your first trip together. Mark the spot, add the date, and frame it. Maps suit couples who remember their story in places: the café, the corner, the first apartment.
8. A star map of your night
A star map shows the stars as they appeared from one place at one time, so most ask for a location and an hour as well as the date. It is the view from the ground, looking up. If you are choosing between that and a print of the planets, here is how a star map and a planet print differ.
9. The planets on the day you met
The Date Print shows the solar system from above on a date you choose: the Sun at the center, and the eight planets and Pluto, each on its own ring, in the direction it lay from the Sun that day. It needs only the date, not a time or a place, and it can carry a message of up to 80 characters on two lines. Frameless, it is a sheet of premium matte paper, so it counts as a paper gift in the plainest sense. You can see the anniversary print, with dates and wording ideas, or read how the solar system looked on any day you choose.
10. Folded paper flowers
A bouquet of folded paper flowers never wilts. Fold them from pages that mean something: the wedding program, a map of the honeymoon, printed copies of your first texts. Origami cranes work too. Fifty-two of them, one for each week of the year, fill a glass jar or hang as a small mobile.
11. A journal of the year
Write a page for each month of your first year: where you were, what you cooked, what you laughed about. Or start a fresh one on the anniversary itself. A five-year journal gives each date its own page with room for a few lines a year, so on the next anniversary you can read what you wrote on this one.
12. A calendar for year two
A printed wall calendar for the coming year, with the days that matter already marked: birthdays, the trip you have planned, the next anniversary circled. Put your own photos on each month. It is paper, it is about time, and it quietly covers the traditional and the modern gift at once.
How do you choose a paper anniversary gift?
Start with the person, not the material. A few rough guides:
- The sentimental one: a letter, printed vows or a photo book. Words and faces matter more to them than objects.
- The planner: twelve envelopes or a marked-up calendar. They will enjoy the year as much as the gift.
- The reader: an inscribed book or a journal they can keep writing in.
- The one who would rather go out: tickets. An evening out together is the present.
- The one who notices what is on the walls: a framed map, a star map or a print of your date, chosen to match the room it will hang in.
- The couple who agreed on no gifts: a letter. It honors the agreement and the day.
Whatever you choose, add a short card that says why. "Because this is where it started" turns almost any paper gift into a personal one.
What are good last-minute paper anniversary gifts?
If the anniversary is tomorrow, or tonight, paper is forgiving. Most of these need a pen, a printer or a single evening:
- A letter. No shopping, and nothing else is quite as personal.
- Twelve envelopes. Plan the dates tonight; the gift unfolds over the year.
- Tickets. Book online, print them at home, and put them in a card.
- A small stack of printed photos. Ask a local print shop or photo counter whether they can print the same day, and tie the stack with ribbon.
- A digital Date Print. The high-resolution file arrives by email in 24 to 48 hours, ready to print and frame, or to tuck inside a card.
