Mother's Day gifts that hold a family date
Updated October 2026.
Mother's Day 2027 is Sunday, May 9, in the US and Canada. The most meaningful Mother's Day gifts point back to something she made happen, and a family date is the simplest way to do that: the day she became a mom, each child's birthday, or the day a grandchild arrived. Choose the date first, then how to carry it.
Which family date should you choose?
Most families have more than one date that could hold the gift. Four work especially well.
- The day she became a mom. Her first child's birthday or, for an adoptive family, the day the first child came home. Every later chapter of the family starts from it, so it suits a gift from all the children together.
- Each child's birthday. One date per child, given as a set. It says "every one of us", and it works well when grown children are giving jointly.
- Her wedding day. Better from a partner than from the children, and closer to an anniversary gift than a Mother's Day one, but some moms would choose it first.
- A grandchild's arrival. For a new grandmother, the day she became a grandma is a new beginning of its own.
If it's her first Mother's Day, the baby's birth date is the natural choice. Our new baby gift ideas cover that date, the words to go with it, and a version for the grandparents, so this guide won't repeat them.
What are the ways to give her a family date?
For a date with your children's birthdays in it, most gift lists offer only jewelry. It's a good choice for a mom who wears it every day, but it isn't the only one. Here's how the main options compare.
| Gift | What it holds | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| A handwritten letter | The story of the date, in your words | Costs only time, and goes with anything below |
| A photo book | Pictures from that day onward | Start early and leave time for printing and delivery |
| Birthstone jewelry | A stone for each child's birth month | Holds the month, not the day; for a mom who wears jewelry |
| The Date Print | The solar system on that day, with up to 80 characters of your words | Needs only the date; framed, frameless or a digital file |
| The Sky Code Case | The same date written as nine bars, one per world | No message; for a phone she carries every day |
A print of the planets is the date-led alternative to jewelry. It shows the solar system from above as it stood on the day: the Sun at the center, the eight planets and Pluto each on its own ring, every one pointing the way it lay from the Sun that day. No time or place is needed. If you'd like to see how that looks for any date before deciding, our guide to the solar system on the day you were born walks through an example.
One print, or one for each child?
A Date Print holds one date. With one child, or if the gift is about the day she became a mom, one print is the whole gift. With several children there are two honest ways to do it.
- One print, one beginning. The day she became a mom, with every child's name in the message.
- A set, one print per child. Each print carries that child's birthday. Choose the same edition and size so they hang together as a group.
A set is quietly interesting to look at. Take two example birthdays about three and a half years apart: April 12, 2016 and September 3, 2019. Between those dates Jupiter moved a little over a quarter of the way around the Sun, and Saturn about a tenth. Neptune and Pluto shifted by less than 8 degrees. Side by side, the outer worlds sit in nearly the same place on both prints while the inner ones are rearranged: a family resemblance, drawn in planets.
If the set is coming from siblings in different cities, it still works as one gift. Place one order for each address, or have every print sent to the sibling who will hand them over.
What to write on a Mother's Day print
The message is up to 80 characters on two short lines. A few examples to adapt, with names as placeholders:
- "The day you became our mom" above "Love, Ava, Sam and Leo"
- "Where our family began" above "Happy Mother's Day"
- "Everything started here" above "With love, from all of us"
- For a set, the child's name on the first line and the same second line on every print, such as "Sam" above "Always your kid"
Short lines read best from across the room. If you're unsure, say less: the date already carries most of the meaning.
What do you give a mom who has everything?
Often, time. A mom who says she needs nothing usually means it, and the gift she remembers is the day itself: a morning with nothing on her list, a meal she didn't cook, a walk somewhere she loves, a long call from the child who lives far away. None of these need ordering ahead.
If you'd like a quiet ending to the day, step outside together after dinner. On the evening of Mother's Day 2027, a slim crescent Moon hangs in the west after sunset, with bright Jupiter and reddish Mars higher up in the southwest, as seen from most of North America.
A letter pairs well with any of this, and with any object. If you give a print or a photo book, tuck the letter behind it and tell her the story of the date: where everyone was, what the weather did, the first thing she said. The object keeps the date. The letter keeps why it matters.
These ideas aren't tied to May, either. The same dates make a good birthday gift for her, and our birthday gift ideas have more on that.
When should you order a personalized Mother's Day gift?
Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May, so the date shifts a little each year. Personalized gifts are made after you order, so leave more time than for something off the shelf.
- Framed or frameless prints are made to order in 2 to 5 business days, then ship free to the US and Canada. Most arrive within 1 to 2 weeks. To arrive by Mother's Day, order by Tuesday, March 30, 2027.
- The Sky Code Case is made to order too, for dates from 1900 to 2050. Order it by the same date, and earlier if you can.
- The digital file is the last-minute option. It arrives by email in 24 to 48 hours, ready to print or to send.
Choosing well ahead is easy, since the date and words are all that's needed. And if you'd like to share the idea before you give anything, Live View is free: pick the day she became a mom, watch the planets move to where they stood, and send it to her or to your siblings.

Keeping the day she became a mom
Whichever date you choose, the planets held one arrangement that day, and the Date Print draws it with your words beneath. Each planet's position is calculated from NASA JPL's published orbital data. It takes any date from 1900 to 2100, in a Black or a White edition, from 8x10 to 16x20. Create her print with the date that started your family.
