About Venus.
Venus is almost Earth’s twin in size, and nothing like it anywhere else. A thick carbon dioxide atmosphere traps heat so well that the ground sits near 465 °C (870 °F), hotter than Mercury, though Venus is almost twice as far from the Sun. The air pressure at the surface is about 90 times Earth’s.
Its clouds of sulfuric acid reflect most of the sunlight that reaches them, so after the Moon it is the brightest natural object in the night sky. It also spins backward compared with most planets, and so slowly that from one sunrise to the next a day there lasts 117 Earth days. The Sun rises in the west.
People have long called it the evening star or the morning star. Look low in the west after sunset or low in the east before dawn: when Venus is up, no star comes close to it.
