What Is the Milky Way's Core, and Why Does It Glow?

The Milky Way core sits in the direction of the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius, low in the south on July and August evenings. From a dark site it looks like a pale, uneven, cloudy band rising out of the horizon, sometimes called the "glittering core" of summer. That glow isn't a cloud or a nebula. It is the combined light of hundreds of billions of stars packed into the galaxy's central bulge, so tightly clustered that individual stars blur into one milky haze, which is where the name "Milky Way" comes from.

How Far Away Is the Center of the Galaxy?

Recent measurements from the VLTI/GRAVITY instrument put the distance to the galactic center at about 26,673 ± 42 light-years, usually rounded to roughly 26,000 light-years. Because light takes time to travel, the glow you see tonight is 26,000 years old: a snapshot of the galaxy's heart from the depths of the last Ice Age, only now arriving at your eyes.

The Monster Hiding in the Glow: Sagittarius A*

At the very center of that glow sits Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole about 4 million times the mass of the Sun, first imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2022. You will never see it yourself, not because it's too small, but because thick interstellar dust blocks the view almost entirely: only about 1 in 10 billion visible-light photons from the core actually reaches Earth. Astronomers study it in infrared and radio instead. What you're really seeing when you look south in summer is the star-clouds around it, not the black hole itself.

When and How to See the Milky Way Core in 2026

The core is up all summer and is best in the darkest, moonless hours. This year's darkest window fell around the July 14 new moon. By July 24, a waxing gibbous Moon (about 81% lit) is brightening the southern sky right where the core sits, so the clearest views now come in the pre-dawn hours after moonset, or you can wait for the next dark window in early August, after the July 29 Buck Moon wanes and before the August 12 Perseid peak. Either way, this is a seasonal showpiece, not a one-night event, so there's no rush to catch it.

To find it, face south after full dark, ideally somewhere away from city lights, and give your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust (skip checking your phone in that window). Use the "Teapot" shape of Sagittarius and the fishhook tail of Scorpius as your landmarks. The brightest patch, like steam rising from the teapot's spout, is the core itself.
