Right now, before dawn, the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower is streaking across a genuinely dark sky, and this week is the better week to watch it. Every one of those quick white streaks is a grain of ancient comet dust hitting our atmosphere at about 92,000 miles an hour and burning up some 60 miles overhead. The shower's broad peak falls on the night of July 30 to 31, but a nearly full Buck Moon rises the night before and will drown out all but the brightest meteors, so the real show is happening in these darker mornings first.

What are the Southern Delta Aquariids?

The Southern Delta Aquariids are an annual meteor shower active from mid July into late August, with debris believed to come from Comet 96P/Machholz, a comet that loops the Sun roughly every five years on a path that dips inside Mercury's orbit. Each meteor is a speck of that comet's shed dust, most no bigger than a grain of sand, meeting Earth's atmosphere at around 41 kilometers a second and flaring out in a single, silent second.

Unlike showers with one sharp night, this one has no defined peak. Rates stay fairly steady for days on either side of maximum, so there's no single night you absolutely have to catch.

When is the best time to watch in 2026?

Under a truly dark sky, the shower runs at a modest 15 to 20 meteors an hour at best. That's a real number, not a storm, and moonlight is what decides whether you see it. The broad peak lands the night of July 30 to 31, right after a 98 percent lit Buck Moon on July 29 that will wash out everything but the brightest fireballs.

The better window is actually now: the moon-free mornings of roughly July 23 to 27, before that moonlight arrives. Plan to look between midnight and dawn, with the radiant climbing highest around 2 a.m. local time.

How to see them: where to look and what to expect

Face south after full dark and give your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust, no phone screen in that window. The shower's radiant sits in the constellation Aquarius, and while it favors the Southern Hemisphere and the southern United States, it's visible farther north too. Keep your eyes on the whole sky rather than one patch, since meteors can streak far from their radiant point.

As a bonus, the Alpha Capricornids are active in the same stretch of sky. It's a much weaker shower, but one known for slow, bright fireballs that can occasionally punch through even a moonlit sky.
